Some of my best sessions have happened through a screen. Not because online therapy is second-best, but because being in your own space, on your own couch, sometimes makes it easier to say the thing you actually came to say. Wherever you are in British Columbia, I offer the same quality of care, secure, confidential, and focused on what matters to you.
Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person sessions for most concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions. In my experience, many people actually open up more easily from a familiar space, there is something about being on your own couch that lowers the guard in a useful way.
What makes therapy work is the relationship between you and your therapist. That does not change over a screen.
There are practical reasons, no commute, more flexible scheduling, no need to rearrange your whole day. But honestly, the bigger reason is this: many people find it easier to talk when they’re somewhere that already feels safe. Your living room, your car, wherever works for you.
For anyone across British Columbia, online therapy with Steady Heart Counselling means:
Attend from home, your car, your office, or anywhere private
Easier to find a time that fits around work, family, or caregiving
Consistency matters in therapy, and that does not change online
If you travel or relocate temporarily, sessions continue uninterrupted
Many clients find it easier to open up from their own space
sessions are held through a secure video platform, in accordance with BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
Online therapy suits a lot of different people and situations, and it often works better than people expect. If you have a busy schedule, caregiving responsibilities, or a commute that makes getting to an office genuinely difficult, online removes a real barrier. If you are someone who opens up more easily from a space that already feels safe, your living room, your home office, even your car parked down the street, online can actually work in your favour.
It also works well for clients who travel frequently or split their time between places. Sessions continue without interruption, wherever you are in British Columbia. And for teenagers especially, there is something about being on their own turf that often makes it easier to show up and engage. If you have done therapy before and want to keep working with someone consistent, online makes that possible even when life gets in the way.
Online sessions work the same way as in-person — 50 minutes, just the two of us, focused on what you bring. Before your first session, you’ll receive a secure link. No downloads, no accounts, nothing to figure out beforehand.
What you need:
Every new client starts with a free 15-minute consultation. No agenda, no pressure – just a chance to talk, ask whatever is on your mind, and see if working together feels right.
Paul Cellarius, RCC, CCC, MA
Registered Clinical Counsellor, Victoria BC
I’ll be honest, when I first moved sessions online, I wasn’t sure it would feel the same. It does. Sometimes more so. People often open up faster when they’re in a space that already feels safe to them. Whether we meet in person or online, the approach is the same, warm, unhurried, and focused on what genuinely matters to you.
My training is in depth psychology through Pacifica Graduate Institute. I am also trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing, and I work with children, teens, and adults. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.
I work with clients throughout British Columbia — Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, the Interior, and Northern BC. My practice is rooted in Victoria, and I have a genuine feel for the particular texture of life here: the pace of the island, the mix of isolation and community that many people quietly carry. If you're looking for a therapist who knows this place, reach out when you're ready.
Make An AppointmentThese are questions I hear often from people before their first online session. If something is on your mind that is not covered here, feel free to get in touch, I am happy to answer.
Yes. Sessions are held through a secure video platform, and all personal information is handled in accordance with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Nothing is recorded, and your information is never shared without your explicit consent, except as required by law.
Most people feel that way before their first session. It usually takes about ten minutes to forget you are on a screen at all. The Free 15-Minute Consultation is a good way to try it out before you commit to anything, low pressure, no obligation.
It depends on their age and how comfortable they are on screen. For teenagers, online often works really well, many actually prefer it. For younger children, in-person is usually the better fit. We can talk through what makes sense for your child during the consultation.
